Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente will meet today in Washington with the Secretary of the State Department, Marco Rubio, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported last night.
According to the agency, the meeting is part of the follow-up to the visit that President Donald Trump’s government official made to Mexico on September 3, as well as the cooperation mechanisms established between both nations in matters of security, migration and border development.
During that visit, Rubio held a meeting at the National Palace with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. In a joint statement issued then, the governments of Mexico and the United States indicated that they had outlined a new route of security cooperation focused on “dismantling” cartels, countering drug and weapons trafficking, and addressing the structural causes of irregular migration.
They agreed to “specific and immediate” actions to ensure a secure border and strengthen law enforcement. As part of the commitments reached, the Cooperation Program on Border Security and Law Enforcement was created, which – according to the bilateral document – is based on the principles of reciprocity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared responsibility and mutual trust.
