DC Elections: the three lists that seek to lead a deteriorated party and its challenges against the government of Gabriel Boric

All this, in a state of certain isolation, since its historical partners of the former Concertación joined the incoming government, being part of ministries and even the Political Committee that La Moneda usually carries out with its parties. The DC defined in its last National Board to support Boric, but staying outside the government, as a collaborative party.

There are three lists that aspire to lead a DC that, for some in the same party, has passed to a degree of irrelevance in the center-left, since “it is no longer the same DC as 20 years ago, it does not have the same weight and the citizens no longer necessarily see us as a respectable and serious party,” according to a former deputy from the community.

The first is the one headed as a candidate to preside over the DC, by the mayor of La Granja, Felipe Delpín, who among his companions on the list has the senator and former presidential candidate, Yasna Provoste. Delpín is the current second vice president of the community, and among his main proposals is the “refoundation of the party where we modernize the DC.” Also, greater territorial support for the authorities and provide more powers to the regional organization of the party. But also He is in favor of being able to recompose the alliances with his historical partners of the PS, PPD, PR, and also PL and NT.

The second list is led by deputy Joanna Pérez, who is running as president, accompanied by deputy Gabriel Ascencio and the mayor of San Ramón, Gustavo Toro. Pérez is close to the former president of the DC and current constituent, Fuad Chahín, and so far has the support of other parliamentarians, such as Gabriel Silber and Matías Walker. What Joanna Pérez has highlighted from her list is that she has “proven leadership, experience, but also youth” and that, in her case, she is “capable of leading a party, but also leading Parliament, regional bodies.” In their list they believe that the rapprochement with the rest of the center-left will be rooted in Congress.

In third option, the former president of the Christian Democrat Youth, Diego Calderón, competes with a young and interregional list. They emphasize that none of them has been in a leadership position in the party before, unlike the representatives of the contending lists. Calderón has said that the other two options “are more of the same” and that “we want to tune in with that hope that Chileans have placed in a new generation to lead the country’s destinies.”

Until now, the internal environment generated by the elections has been tense, with “dirty play”, according to militants from the community, who agree that the lists have been passing accounts. In fact, just after this internal election, the DC summoned a National Council for Tuesday the 25th to address the controversy of the silver, after the audit of the Comptroller’s Office, which showed unpaid expenses, and to review the dismissal of four officials, without payment of compensation. Both issues are claims that two of the lists have raised: Delpín’s in the case of silver, and Pérez’s in the case of dismissals.

It is expected that the results of the voting will be known around 8:00 p.m., and if none of the lists obtains more than 50% of the votes, a second round will be held between the two with the most votes.
