Day of tribute to Emilio Bacardí in Santiago de Cuba

Exhibitions, conferences and tours of historical sites are part of the tribute day for the centenary of the death of Emilio Bacardí, patriot, humanist and first mayor of Santiago de Cuba. It will take place from August 21 to 28.

The communicator of the Provincial Center of Cultural Heritage, Dairelis Ulloa, said that the encounter with the life and work of Bacardi, promoter of the development of the Santiago culture since the first years of the Republic, will be promoted.

The day will be a space to exchange on various topics related to Bacardí, such as heritage conservation, Freemasonry and its imprint on the Santiago rum industry.

The book will be presented Emilio Bacardi Moreau. of passionate cuban humanismby the historian Olga Portuondo, a biographical study of her figure that delves into her political, cultural and industrial work.

Emilio Bacardí promoted the creation of several significant public works, including the repair of the civil hospital, electric lighting and the traditional Flag Festival every December 31 in Parque de Céspedes.

As a writer, in 1910 the first part of his novel appeared in Santiago de Cuba. Way of the Cross, an evocation of the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878). In 1914 the complete novel was published in Barcelona, ​​with its second and last part, entitled Magdalene.

Emilio Bacardí died in Santiago on August 28, 1922, at the age of 78.
