MEXICO CITY.- On the morning of May 6, an explosion collapsed part of the emblematic Hotel Saratoga in Old Havana, and damaged some of the neighboring buildings. The news was known almost immediately by the transmissions on social networks of people who witnessed it. Due to the magnitude of the damage, it was predicted that there would be fatalities.
Among those who recorded live broadcasts was the activist Ángel Cuza, who ended up detained for four days as punishment for his video.
A cloud of dust was still covering the place when shocked bystanders rushed to try to help and rescued some people from the rubble. From then on, the rescue efforts did not stop until May 12, when they found the body of the last missing person. Forty-six people died, 45 of them Cubans. The number of victims would probably have been higher, were it not for the fact that the hotel was still inactive for renovations.
