David, Goliath and the metaphorical fires

Activists who defend ecology and biodiversity do not control individuals who burn uncontrolled plots of forest for personal cultivation. Nor do they pursue illegal miners who destroy the environment with mercury to extract gold. The same occurs with black fishing, where few pursue small boats that get around the law. And something similar can be seen in the health sector, where almost no one questions the lobbying of small pharmacies, organized to undermine the distribution of medicines.

Look: And Cajamarca? Forest fires destroy more than 10,000 hectares of forests and crops

It is always easier to criticize big business. The transnational monster, the Peruvian businessman who appears in the power polls. The big capital that is the elephant in the middle of the regional room. The mining company that pays taxes, but whose royalties are not executed. The big corporation of the richest man in Peru.

The narrative always tells the same story. An ecological David faces a corporate Goliath; a hydra with as many heads as there are corporate names; a bogeyman with front men, politicians on the payroll and good press. We see it in reports, denunciations and even in film fiction.

However, what we see now is the action of small (and not so small) organized groups with a network of interests and lobbies in Congress. And fighting them is very difficult due to their low visibility and their vindictive and nationalist aura.

Even if the left says otherwise, large formal companies can be audited and even prosecuted. It takes years and a lot of effort, but there are cases. What is really difficult is facing an almost invisible enemy, several Davids who have the victim narrative on their side.
