Daughter of former minister Alejandro Gil demands transparency and public trial against her father

The daughter of the former Minister of Economy and Planning of Cuba, Alejandro Gil Fernández, published a statement on social networks in which she demands total transparency regarding the judicial process being followed against her father, detained since February 2024, and demands that the trial be public and televised.

In the text, divided into three parts, Laura María Gil González He began by stating that his pronouncement is supported by articles 48 and 54 of the Constitution of the Republic, which recognize the rights to the defense of image and honor, and freedom of expression.

She points out that until now she had chosen not to speak out “out of respect for due process” and to avoid “popular discontent or an international conflict,” but assures that recent events led her to express her “deep dismay.”

The official note from the Attorney General’s Office published on October 31, it reported on the alleged crimes committed by Gil Fernández, including corruption and espionage.

This last charge, according to the former minister’s daughter, is “the cornerstone of this investigation” and she regretted that sufficient details about the case were made public, which, she claims, “has encouraged popular speculation.”

In his statement, he requests that the Cuban Government expand public information about the accusations, specifying “what he did, which country or countries he refers to, what information he revealed and under the direct order of who he acted,” among other elements. It also considers that the governments allegedly involved should make an official statement.

“These are important details that the prosecutor’s note did not cover and the Cuban people deserve to know, and I also consider that the government or governments for which he supposedly worked and received instructions should officially make a statement on the matter in question, which I believe, in my opinion, is a very serious accusation, which transcends the Cuban political sphere and leads to an international case,” he continued.

Gil González assures that both she and her father support the demand for an open-door trial, with the presence of national and foreign media, broadcast on Cuban television and Cubavisión International.

“Not only me, Alejandro Gil is also demanding it, not from today, but from day one,” he wrote.

“I, like you, will be very aware of the outcome of this situation, and its national and international political and social impact, and I join the popular call to bring transparency in this case to its maximum expression; the people demand it, the family demands it, and Gil also demands it.”

In his message, he emphasizes that his statement “does not incite violence or reveal state secrets” and warns that any retaliation for his statements would be “illegal and a violation of his human rights.”

The statement concludes by assuring that the former minister “remains firm in his defense” and “will not recognize any crime that has not been duly verified.”

Gil Fernández, who was separated from his position and detained at the beginning of 2024, faces judicial proceedings for alleged economic and state security crimes. The authorities have not yet specified a trial date or additional details about the case.
