Daughter of Edmundo González: “Playing with the expectation” of releases is torture

Mariana González, daughter of Edmundo González, said that the fact that other prisoners remain behind bars generates “uncertainty, generates deep anxiety, constant anxiety, an anguish that adds to physical, mental and spiritual exhaustion.”

Mariana González, daughter of Edmundo González, considered this Sunday, January 18, cruelty to “play with the expectation of freedom” of political prisoners and that of their families.

“It is a form of cruelty and psychological torture,” he said in his count ofafter mentioning the case of her husband, Rafael Tudares, who has been detained since January 2025 and whom she was barely able to see in recent days for just 20 minutes.

González stressed that political prisoners “know that releases are taking place,” a process that was announced on January 8 by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, which generated expectations among family members, who have since spent the night outside several prisons awaiting release.

“Knowing that others regain their freedom while they continue in uncertainty generates deep anxiety, constant anxiety, an anguish that adds to the physical, mental and spiritual wear and tear,” said Mariana González.

Last Friday, she reported that she was able to see her husband in the Rodeo I prison, in the state of Miranda, after more than a year of his imprisonment.

Rafael Tudares was arrested on January 7, 2025, when human rights defender Carlos Correa and former opposition presidential candidate Enrique Márquez were also arrested, the latter two released.

More than 100 political prisoners have been released after Jorge Rodríguez’s announcement and human rights NGOs demand the authorities release them all.
