Data centers lead CO2 emissions in Latin America

Companies that work with data processing centers rank third in the sectors that emit greenhouse gases (GHG) in Latin America due to their high consumption of electricity and water, a situation that drives them to transform the way they operate to adopt the use of renewable energies to mitigate negative effects on the environment, indicated the technology company Huawei.

“Data or information centers are large consumers of electrical energy. Let’s say that they are among the top three of the largest consumers of electricity in the region”, so it is necessary to automate technical processes to reduce carbon emissions and build an intelligent society with low CO2, said yesterday the director of Data Center of the South region for Huawei Latin America, Bruno Zavaleta.

Several factors affect the development of data services companies: energy use, labor and others that add to the generation of carbon such as transportation and water resources.

“Huawei’s short-term objective is to collaborate in the transition of companies that need to replace their energy matrix with clean energy so that both the supply they need and the service they provide have a positive impact on the environment”Bruno ZavaletaData Center Director of the South region for Huawei Latin America

Worldwide, the average efficient use of energy is recorded at 1.59, but ideally it should remain at one, a level that is “almost impossible” to reach, Zabaleta estimated in an interview with Free Journal.

He reported that Latin American countries exceed the average value of energy efficiency worldwide with 1.79. “We are not being efficient, we are not even reaching the world average”, so greater efforts are required to optimize the use of electricity, the expert considered.

Proposal

To improve the technical strategy of the processes and promote the technology industry and other sectors that require data centers to operate, such as finance, the technology company presented Huawei DigitalPower, technological actions to build a smart society with low carbon emissions.

“There is a great responsibility to achieve better labor practices that reduce CO2 emissions among those who provide technological services, infrastructure builders, designers and among those who offer maintenance so that the centers that work with the collection of information offer a service effective”, raised the representative of Huawei.
