Dante Mossi on DD violations. H H. in Nicaragua: “We don’t deal with that kind of issues”

CABEI gets ready to "improve our support" for the Ortega dictatorship

The president of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), Dante Mossi, affirmed that the financial institution does not ignore the issue of human rights in Nicaragua, nor are they blind to this issue, but that at CABEI “we do not deal with that type of issue” .

Nicaragua has been experiencing a deep crisis of human rights violations since April 2018, when the regime ordered to put down with blood and fire the social protests against the fire in Indio Maíz and the failed social security reforms.

“As a bank, we have a constitution, which are the Bank’s bylaws, these were quite clear and precise: we are an apolitical institution. We respect the sovereignty of the member countries, we respect their decisions, we respect their priority. We accommodate ourselves in the sense of seeking how we support programs and projects that improve people’s quality of life,” Dante Mossi told Channel 12 television.

Mossi affirmed that they are a development bank for Central America and that on the subject of accountability they do so to the portfolios of the Ministry of Finance of each country, whom he identified as their “highest authorities.”

“Regarding the issue of human rights, this is not the appropriate instance to deal with them. There are other international bodies that deal with these issues and the Central American Bank is not one of them. It’s not that we ignore them, but it’s not in our mandate,” he said.

“Obviously we are interested in the issue of health and education, which is why the bank created the CABEI foundation. There are a number of programs that we have, but they obey well-established criteria in our statutes to support certain issues. Regarding these (human rights) issues, it is not that we are blind, but our mandate is very clear, we are an economic development bank and we do not deal with these types of issues,” added the official from the regional financial institution.

International human rights organizations have documented serious human rights violations in the country. The Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) concluded that crimes against humanity were committed in Nicaragua.
