Santo Domingo.-The former president, Danilo Medina(2012-2020) stated that Dominican citizens must learn to judge their leaders by their actions and behavior over time, and not by the speeches with which many present themselves as champions of honesty and transparency.
The approach of former president Medina occurred as a result of the judicial process for the millionaire embezzlement of more than 15 billion pesos from the ARS National Health Insurance (Senasa), case in which its former director, Santiago Hazimwas sent to serve 18 months of preventive detention along with six other defendants, while three were placed under house arrest.
In this context, Medina, who chairs the opposition Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), maintained that cases like this leave a clear lesson for society, regarding the need to evaluate those who exercise or aspire to power beyond public discourse.
“People who constantly want to validate themselves by talking about honesty, transparency and purity… the Dominican people have to follow them not because of the speech they say, but because of what they do in their lives,” he expressed when approached by the press.

In his opinion, authentic values are not proclaimed, but are reflected naturally in the personal and public career of each individual.
“Because he who is honest, is neat, is upright, does not live proclaiming those values.”. It is enough to know their steps through life to get an idea of who they are,” he said.
The former president reiterated that the greatest lesson of this type of judicial process is not to get carried away by current discourses that seek to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the population.
“You don’t have to follow people because of the current discourse that they raise before the population, but by what they do with their private life and when they come to public life,” he concluded.
