MIAMI, United States.- Daniel Ortega’s regime in Nicaragua canceled this Wednesday the legal entities of another 100 NGOs, and with them there are already 958 organizations of this type dissolved after the popular revolt of April 2018.
According to a note from Infobae, the outlawing of these 100 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) was approved urgently and without debate by the 75 Sandinista deputies and their allies. Another 16 legislators, of the 91 that make up Congress, abstained from voting.
According to the information, during the vote 100 more NGOs were proposed to be urgently canceled by the Sandinista deputy Filiberto Rodríguez, promoter of the initiatives.
If this new initiative is approved on Thursday by the Board of Directors of Parliament, there would be a total of 1,058 NGOs outlawed in Nicaragua as a result of the 2018 revolts, which Ortega described as a supposed military coup.
The Sandinista Filiberto Rodríguez assured in the plenary that the illegalized NGOs had used resources from the donations they received to try to overthrow Ortega in the 2018 demonstrations. The deputy has not presented evidence in this regard.
In april 2018Thousands of Nicaraguans took to the streets to protest social security reforms that later became a demand for Ortega’s resignation.
According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the protests left at least 355 dead. However, local organizations have reported that the figure is 684. The Ortega regime recognizes 200.
The head of Parliament, the official Gustavo Porras, said that the banning of NGOs is part of a process of ordering “something that was adrift.” According to him, there were organizations that did not function and others that did not comply with the laws, were not accountable or did not comply with their own statutes.
The parliamentarian assured that the regime will continue “with this cleaning work”, excused in that there cannot be more than 6,000 NGOs in Nicaragua “that are not doing anything.”
The Ortega government “has described non-profit organizations as instruments of neoliberalism,” and as having “taken rise in neoliberal governments,” alluding to the Administrations between 1990 and 2007, “precisely to act as an instrument against trade unions and the organization of the people.
So far this year, the Parliament, with an official majority, has liquidated 759 NGOs and a total of 958 since December 2018.
Daniel Ortega, 76, has been in power for 15 years and 5 consecutive months, amid allegations of authoritarianism and electoral fraud.
