Dana Oriana: Measures to protect against rains, hail and snow in the Peruvian Sierra

On Saturday 16, until Monday, August 18, in the Sierra Centro and Sierra Sur del Peru, the Dana phenomenon (isolated depression at high levels), called Oriana, will be presented, which will impact several regions of the Sierra Centro and South of the country with rains, hail, snow and winds of up to 50 km/h, according to the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi).

“The entry of Dana Oriana can generate risk conditions not only on roads and homes, but also in health. It is essential to anticipate and not underestimate the intensity of these rainfall ”, Cinthya Arteta warned, sEngineering, Prevention and Risk Management Locér of Rímac.

Given this scenario, Rímac urges the population to take precautions to protect their health, their safety and their heritage.

Practical recommendations:

  • Avoid going to risk areas such as riverbank riverside, slopes and streams for possible landslides.
  • Protect ceilings and gutters to prevent leaks or collapses due to accumulation of water or hail.
  • Protect animals and crops: to protect cattle and cover plantations vulnerable to rainfall (rains, snowfall and hail).
  • Avoid unnecessary transfers in areas with weather alerts. If it is essential to travel, do so during the day.

” For those who must drive in affected areas, it is essential to extreme security measures. How to reduce speed, maintain a greater distance than usual with the vehicle from front and avoid sudden maneuvers that can cause skidside. In case of loss of visibility or presence of ice on the road, the safest thing is to stop until the conditions improve, ” Cinthya Arteta shared.

  • Have an emergency kit with flashlight, battery radius, kit, water and non -perishable foods.

Health prevention

“Prepare with anticipation saves lives. It is not just about protecting material goods, but about preserving the physical integrity and health of people,” Arteta added.

You must contemplate:

Coat and respiratory care: Use thermal clothing, scarves and outdoor masks to reduce cold air exposure and particles.

Monitor symptoms of hypothermia, respiratory infections and complications in vulnerable people such as children, older adults and people with chronic diseases.

How will Dana Oriana be presented in each region?

Dana is an atmospheric phenomenon that is formed at a high height, between 5000 and 12000 meters above sea level, and resembles a large cold air bubble that moves through the South Pacific. Upon entering tropical areas, quickly cools the environment where it passes.

On the central and south coast, it will cause greater solar brightness and increased temperatures during the day. However, the presence of cloudiness is not ruled out in the early morning and early morning. In addition, the step can generate an increase in the speed of the winds on the center coast, especially from the afternoon of 18.

In southern Peru, when entering warmer and more humid air, an interaction is generated that favors the occurrence of solid rainfall, mainly snowy in high Andean areas. In some cases, these snowfall and rains can spread to the Central Sierra.

” Given this scenario, it is important to be attentive to the official updates of the Senamhi and local authorities, and not disseminate not verified information, ” recommended Cinthya Arteta, Deputy Manager of Engineering, Prevention and Risk Management of Rimac.
