The D Frente platform, made up of activists, intellectuals and opposition groups, led this Thursday a message to the Cuban Government denouncing its responsibility in the visible impoverishment of the Island at the beginning of 2023.
The communiqué calls on the regime to respond to the “harsh reality of Cubans”, who have assumed that “nothing can be done” to improve the situation in the country. “The next twelve months can be worse than those that have just ended,” laments the text.
D Frente states that the Government could execute numerous “political, economic, legal and social actions” that make possible an improvement in the circumstances that affect the Cuban family today in different spheres.
It points out, for example, “the release of hundreds of citizens imprisoned for reasons of conscience” and indicates that they are “human beings, entire families, who only serve as an example of the need to control that power and as a bargaining chip before political negotiations with other actors”.
“The next twelve months may be worse than the ones that have just ended”
This is the first of four fundamental claims that D Frente launches at the regime. In addition to the release “immediately and without conditions”, they propose to “cease the repression against activists, journalists” and all those who do not share the ideology of the Communist Party.
On the other hand, they demand the “end of exile and regulations as measures of political punishment,” a situation that is part of the massive exodus of Cubans that the Island is experiencing. Finally, they demand “recognizing opposition organizations as political subjects with full rights to act in Cuban society”.
The four proposals of D Frente are, they affirm, essential for a future “national reconciliation”. In addition, they claim to be open to the support of the “democratic governments of the world that are willing to facilitate this process towards a Republic that does not criminalize dissent, recognizes political pluralism and advances in national reconciliation.”
The group guarantees its intention to make proposals to resolve the crisis on the Island in all aspects and, as they have stated on other occasions, “refound the Republic.”
Last December, taking advantage of a petition for the release of political prisoners Formulated by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba, D Frente sent an open letter to Pope Francis asking him to mediate in favor of this cause.

The organization asked the Pope to exercise his “good offices” to appeal to the island’s authorities, and recalled that many of the inmates have suffered “criminalization by the Cuban government of the exercise of universally recognized human rights, such as freedom of expression of association and peaceful protest”.
From December 14 to 19, the organization held its internal elections, in which Elena Larrinaga, representing the organizations, and Julio Antonio Fernández Estrada, representing the individual members, were designated as presidents of the Assembly.
The Coordinating Committee was made up of Ileana de la Guardia, Frisia Batista, Manuel Cuesta Morúa, Jorge Masetti and Michel Fernández.
