The victim was taken to the Pindamonhangaba Emergency Room, but did not survive his injuries.

The cyclist, says the agency, had invaded the right lane when trying to avoid some pilgrims who were traveling along the shoulder of the highway, towards the city of Aparecida (SP)where the Patron Saint Festival is taking place in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida, in the National Sanctuary. Witnesses reported to the Federal Highway Police that the truck driver probably did not notice the cyclist and fled the scene without providing assistance to the victim.

In the early hours of Saturday, another case involving a pilgrim was registered by police authorities on the same highway. A 30-year-old military police officer who was on a pilgrimage to the National Sanctuary of Aparecida was shot dead during a robbery that occurred in a section near the city of Lorena. He had worked at the corporation for 10 years and leaves behind a wife and two children, a 4-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl.
