Through a publication, the outlawed Citizen for Freedom (CxL) party demanded from the Daniel Ortega regime “the immediate release” of the political prisoner Pedro Joaquin Chamorro Barrios, kidnapped for more than 17 months.
“From Ciudadanos por la Libertad we demand the immediate release of our founding member Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Barrios, so that this Christmas he can be with his family,” CxL wrote through his Twitter account.

The party led by the political exile, Kitty Monterrey, recalled that the prisoner of conscience has 541 days imprisoned in one of the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Nuevo Chipote” in Managua.

Chamorro Barrios was arbitrarily detained on Friday, June 25, around midnight. Before being imprisoned, he constantly demanded the freedom of his sister, former presidential candidate Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, and blamed the Ortega-Murillo regime for what could happen to him. Pedro Joaquín had also expressed the possibility of running for the Presidency of Nicaragua.
On the night of March 11, Chamorro was found guilty for the alleged crime of abusive management, ideological falsehood, appropriation and improper retention from the extinct Fundación Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (FVBCh). He was sentenced to nine years in prison and disqualified from holding public office for the same period after a marathon impeachment trial held behind closed doors.
Various human rights organizations and the family of the brother of the political prisoner and former presidential candidate, Christian Chamorrohas demanded the immediate release of the 71-year-old political prisoner, who is part of the list of more than 230 political prisoners.
