Cut to the Judiciary by 2026 puts judge settlements at risk

BofA warns of impact of judicial reform on Mexican democracy

On the other hand, in the PEF, practically the same resources were approved for the OAJ as those that the Federal Judiciary Council (CJF) had before the Judicial Reform, a body that for almost 30 years was responsible for practically the same administrative tasks in the Judiciary, plus those of supervision of the judges.

Last August, the CJF endorsed the Budget Project for 2026 and proposed giving the Judicial Administration Body an additional 14,055 million pesos, which was authorized with the rejection of the then Minister President of the Court, Norma Piña.

Four then councilors of the Judiciary voted in favor of the increase, three of them now members of the new Judicial Disciplinary Court (TDJ): Celia Maya García, Eva Verónica de Gyvés and Bernardo Bátiz Vázquez.

Now that increase of 14 billion additional pesos was annulled by the decision of the deputies, and the OAJ will spend practically the same expenses as those that the CJF had: 60, 168 million pesos for 2026, compared to 62, 025 million pesos that the Council administered this year.

However, there is no longer a Trust to pay the settlements of the judges and this was alerted by the National Action (PAN) deputy, Margarita Zavala.

On the stand, he claimed that the Morenoist bench and allies “have lied again and again to the Judiciary because, not only did they steal their money from the trusts, but they also promised and agreed upon compensation that has not arrived and is not planned.”

In September and October, judges, magistrates and PJF staff have reported lack of compensation payments, the first, and employees accused that they were not paid the 2025 salary increase retroactively to January, as should have happened.

A week ago, the workers held a work stoppage to also denounce workplace harassment by the new judges, and lack of supplies to work.

Deputy Eduardo Gaona, from Movimiento Ciudadano, expressed these claims of 55,000 judicial workers also during the budget discussion, when opposing the cut to the PJF.

“Let’s not lower the Budget of the Judiciary, we are talking about more than 55 thousand workers who are in this Branch and the workers do not have pencils or toilet paper, they have not been fulfilled in the matter of their compensation, much less, much less are they being fulfilled with the rights that they had already won.”

“An injustice is being done to them, causing them to take to the streets of all the cities,” he claimed.
