The presentation of documents to the Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime of Lima, by the counselors for Cusco, Christian López, and for La Convencion, María Becerra, has generated a complete schism in the Regional Government of Cusco, where the existence of an alleged criminal organization and a network of corruption.
After the declarations of several regional councilors, who assure that the presentation of these reports is only a ‘political game’, the regional governor of Cusco, Jean Paul Benavente, came forward to second the councilors who support him, mentioning that there are cases of corruption, but in an isolated manner, and that he completely rejects the existence of an entire criminal network in the institution he manages.
“I am sure that we are fighting against corruption, that there are isolated incidents, there are, they must be investigated and reported, but I will never allow a criminal organization to exist here (…) I challenge you, ask the contracted workers, appointed and replaced if there is corruption in this government, we have clean hands and we want to eradicate that scourge,” he said last Wednesday.

For the regional councilor María Becerra, there is sufficient evidence to corroborate the existence of an alleged criminal organization in the Regional Government of Cusco, this in the midst of complaints for ‘ghost’ consultancies, investments in IOARR, purchase of oxygen cylinders, etc. Some of which are already under investigation by the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Corruption Crimes of Cusco Officials.
On the other hand, the general manager of Gore Cusco, Daniel Maravi, rejected these accusations, calling them only ‘subjective judgments’ about the accusations that are under investigation, referring that this type of ‘campaign’ only cracks an institution, which according to him , is a model of transparency and modernity throughout Peru, this official appeared with several of his advisers, who wore white gloves as a symbol of rejection of corruption.
“First, these chats of shame are presented where you can see what is the intention behind this, it is said that there are some audios, I will never be able to record someone in my office, but these people who are dedicated to recording that are the really responsible for how our region is and now they want to say that they are inspectors, when the only thing they generate is chaos and anxiety”, Benavente Garcia noted.
