The mayor of the district of Chamacaprovince of Chumbivilcas, Sunday Centeno Roomswas arrested in the early hours of November 30 in the city of Cusco for allegedly driving drunk stateafter participating in the official launch of the Huaylia festival.
The mayor was intervened by personnel from the National Police Traffic Unitwho identified obvious signs of drunkenness and took him to the Cusco police station for legal proceedings.
PNP Colonel Walter Poma, head of the Cusco Police Region, reported that the mayor had caused an accident before his intervention. “Our Police have carried out an intervention […] to a person with obvious symptoms of drunkenness and who had caused an accident,” he said. The qualitative test was positive and, later, the quantitative result was confirmed: 1.87 blood alcohol.

Poma specified that the vehicle that Salas Centeno was driving belongs to the District Municipality of Chamaca. “If it belongs to the municipality, it belongs to the State,” he stated, pointing out that this fact could generate other administrative or criminal responsibilities.
The mayor will remain detained while investigations continue for the alleged crime of driving while intoxicated. The police chief indicated that, in addition to the Traffic Unit, other areas such as Anti-Corruption could participate due to the use of a state asset.
As of the closing of this note, Salas Centeno had not yet given his statement at the police station. The authorities hope to receive her during the day to determine her legal situation.
