THE Director General of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Luiz Fernando Corrêaand the former deputy director of the agency, Alessandro Moretti, testified this Thursday (17) to the Federal Police (PF)in Brasilia.
To the hearings lasted about five hours and were held in scope of investigations into the parallel performance of ABIN during the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
THE Investigation runs in secrecy of justiceand the details of the testimonials were not disclosed.
THE The main target of the investigation is the illegal use of ABIN to illegally monitor public authorities during the Bolsonaro government.
According to the PF, police and delegates of the corporation that were assigned to ABIN, as well as servers of the agency, would have participated in a criminal organization to comply with illegal espionage actions.
During the investigation, the PF researchers found that an action was carried out to obtain confidential information from Paraguayan authorities involved in the negotiations of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Power Agreement, operated by the two countries. The case was revealed by the UOL portal.
According to the report, the Monitoring of the Paraguayan authorities would have occurred between June 2022, during the Government of Bolsonaro, and March 2023, the beginning of the Lula administration.
Given the facts, the PF decided to take the testimony of Luiz Fernando Corrêa, current director of ABIN, and Moretti, who was dismissed from office in January 2024, to clarify the facts.
After the disclosure of monitoring, the Itamaraty denied any involvement of the current government with the spy to Paraguay.
According to a statement issued to the press, the Intelligence action began in the Bolsonaro government and was made without effect by Abin in March 2023, after the interim direction of the agency became aware of the case.
“The current director general of ABIN was, at that time, in the process of approving his name in the Federal Senate, and only took office on May 29, 2023,” said Itamaraty.
