According to local reports, the lifeless bodies of three men were found inside a truck in the Amistad neighborhood and two more in the Villa Satélite and 5 de Mayo neighborhoods.
The Secretariat of Public Security (SSPS) detailed that around 2:00 a.m. this Monday they received about 30 reports of firearm detonations in different parts of the municipality.
At least 65 cameras, the state authority added, were affected during the violent day.
In addition to the five murdered people – who were found at different points – five more people were deprived of their liberty: three in the Guadalupe Victoria neighborhood and two in a restaurant.
The SSPS reported that it also received reports of five vehicles that were damaged by “flat tires” on the pavement.
Universities cancel classes
Given the violent events, some universities in Culiacán suspended in-person classes, however, state educational authorities reported that schools will remain open for anyone who wishes to attend.
Classes at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa will be remote in its units in the capital and Navolato; a measure that was also applied by the TEC Campus Sinaloa; the Tecnológico de Culiacán; the Chapultepec Institute and CBTis 224.
Just on Friday, November 22, Pedro Legarreta Lores, former local representative and who served as president of the National Union of Parents of Culiacán, was murdered in the capital of Sinaloa.
The also member of the organization Ciudadanos Construyendo la Paz died after receiving two gunshot wounds for trying to resist an attempted robbery at his home.
Homicides triple after arrest of “El Mayo”
Intentional homicides have tripled in Sinaloa since the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, which sparked clashes between “Los Chapitos” and “Los Mayos.”
Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, explained on November 12 that between January and August 2024 there was a stable daily average of intentional homicides, however, starting in September there was an increase.
“Starting in September and due to a struggle between two organized crime groups, an increase in the number of homicides was recorded, reaching a daily average of 4.17 in September and 5.77 in October,” he stated.
