It was declared a national monument.
News Colombia.
The Clock Tower is one of the most emblematic buildings in Cúcuta, located on Calle 13 (formerly Calle José Custodio García Rovira), between Avenidas 3ª and 4ª. This iconic place, home to the Culture and Tourism Secretariat of Norte de Santander, is not only an architectural landmark, but also a vibrant center of cultural and artistic expressions.
Origins and transformation of the Clock Tower
The history of the Clock Tower dates back to the early 20th century when it was built as a house for the Colmenares Jácome family.
In 1923, the property was acquired by the company Eléctricas del Norte SA, responsible for public lighting in the city.
This company transformed the building, adding the iconic tower designed and built by the master Crisanto Ramírez. The tower, originally illuminated with tricolour bulbs alluding to the national flag, became a symbol of the city.
The bell clock that gives its name to the tower was manufactured in Turin, Italy, by the Miroglio family and has the inscription: “Premiata fonteria de Poli Victorio Veneto Italia. Compañía Eléctrica del Norte -Cúcuta. MCMXXX”. This piece was imported by Andrés Fernández, then manager of the company.
Converted into a cultural center
Since 1960, the Clock Tower has played a crucial role in promoting the arts in Cúcuta.
With the creation of the schools of dramatic art and painting, the building began to be used for cultural purposes. It was officially inaugurated as a cultural center on February 24, 1962 by the then President of the Republic, Alberto Lleras Camargo.
In 1982, the Clock Tower House was declared a National Monument, and in 2003 it was designated a Site of Cultural Interest of National Character.
These distinctions recognize its value as an outstanding example of republican architecture in Colombia and one of the most beautiful and significant urban landmarks for the city.
Restoration work began in 1989 and was completed in 2006.
Today, the Clock Tower houses the Culture Secretariat of the Government of Norte de Santander and has spaces dedicated to the promotion of cultural events in the region.
Its cultural offerings include plays and temporary exhibitions at its modern art museum.
A Christmas icon
The silhouette of the Clock Tower stands out especially during Christmas, when it is illuminated, becoming a point of attraction for residents and visitors.
The Clock Tower not only represents an architectural heritage of Cúcuta, but also a beacon of culture and art that continues to enrich the life of the city and its inhabitants.
