Miami.-The Cuban American congressman María Elvira Salazar He has announced that he is preparing a bill in the United States Congress with the aim of benefiting Cubans who are in the country with the document I-220A.
“We are doing a law where we ask the Federal Congress to allow Cubans with I220A to follow the migration process until we have parol Univision.
“They are already in the United States and can take advantage of the Cuban adjustment law, which is not the case of other nationalities,” he concluded.
The I220-A, known as “Supervision Order”, is issued to certain immigrants that are released under supervision while waiting for migratory procedures. However, this document is not considered a legal admission to the country, which prevents many Cubans from accessing the benefits of the adjustment law.
The Cuban Adjustment Law It allows Cuban citizens who have been admitted or inspected and released in the United States to request permanent residence after a year and a day of continuous presence in the country, provided they meet certain requirements.
The bill proposed by Congresswoman Salazar could also benefit Venezuelans, he explained to Univisión.
“We are asking the White House to assign the TPS again for the 300,000 Venezuelans that it expires in April, and the other 300,000 that expires in September,” he said.
Salazar pointed out that these people “cannot return to Venezuela for obvious reasons.”
The temporary protection status (TPS) is granted when the United States National Security Department considers that it is too dangerous for people to return to their countries of origin. Other sixteen countries have been designated for TPS for various reasons, including national catastrophes and wars.
Immigrants who lose TPS or humanitarian permit can no longer work legally in the United States and face the risk of deportation.
