MIAMI, United States. — Several Cuban immigrants who entered the United States with I-220B deportation orders have been detained after attending appointments with the immigration authorities, a fact that has raised alarm among the island’s nationals who have not managed to regularize their status in the country northern.
Reports from different media outlets indicate that the migrants have been warned that they are on a list to be deported to the Island.
“They told us that they had a list and that that list was to deport us to Cuba,” he told the network. Telemundo Sergio Pérez, one of the immigrants from the Island who was detained.
Although the reports have not been confirmed by the US Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), they have not been denied by that federal agency either.
Renowned immigration attorney Wilfredo Allen warned those Cubans that, in effect, they run the risk of being returned to the Island.
The jurist told the chain America Teavee that he is aware of some cases of people who have been detained. These are Cuban immigrants who entered US territory more than two years ago with I220B.
Allen recalled that the entry with I-220B is not considered by the authorities as a legal entry, so those who have entered the US with that form must take into account that they are exposed to being detained.
“I-220B was always a deportation entry. You are here because your country of origin does not want to accept you”, stressed the lawyer.
According to Allen, Cubans who have an appointment with the immigration authorities soon should prepare a Suspension of Deportation form (I-246) as soon as possible, although he warned that this should be prepared with a competent lawyer “who knows what is doing”.
The jurist explained that the arrests of the Cubans may respond to a new ICE policy and that it is possible that the origin of the new procedure is due to conversations between the US authorities and the Cuban regime.
