MIAMI, United States. — Cubans living in Rome and other Italian cities joined the commemoration of the first anniversary of 11J with a demonstration in front of Esquilino Square, in the capital of that European country.
The Cubans protested against human rights violations on the island and called for the unconditional release of the July 11 protesters who are still in detention.
Sadiel González, one of the Cubans who gathered in front of Plaza Esquilino, told CubaNet that one of the objectives of the protest is to make visible to Italians and people from other countries the situation that the Island is going through.
“We want to tell the Italians that we don’t need more money, that what we need is for them to help us achieve true freedom,” said the young man.
During the demonstration, the Cubans gathered in Rome held a minute of silence for the Cuban biologist Ariel Ruiz Urquiola, who this Sunday completed a week on a hunger and thirst strike in front of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in Geneva, Switzerland.
“This minute of silence is also valid for all those political prisoners who have died in Castro’s dungeons since 1959,” activist Bárbara Castro told CubaNet.
The protesters also assured that Cubans must take to the streets to demand their freedom, as peoples of other countries, such as Sri Lanka, have recently done.
Cubans based in Madrid (Spain) also marched this Sunday against the Cuban dictatorship on the eve of the first anniversary of the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021.
The manifestation It was attended by the singer Yotuel Romero, as well as politicians such as Rocío Monasterio and representatives of exile organizations in the Iberian Peninsula.
