AREQUIPA, Peru – Starting August 23, Cubans in Mexico will be able to schedule appointments on the CBP One app from the states of Chiapas and Tabasco, in addition to the northern and central areas of that country, from where they can currently do so.

This was reported by the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP), detailing that “migrants located in northern and central Mexico continue to have the possibility of scheduling appointments to appear at eight ports of entry along the southwest border.”

In addition, the text states, they will soon be able to schedule appointments from the states of Tabasco and Chiapas, which will allow them to make appointments without having to travel to the north to do so.

As a gateway to Mexico, on the southern border of that country, the states from Tapachula and Chiapas are where Cubans and migrants in general are mainly concentrated.

CBP also indicated that in July there was a slight decrease in the number of Cubans entering the US, although the figure remains high and, following the temporary suspension of the humanitarian parole program, an increase in access by land, through the border with Mexico, and by sea, through the Straits of Florida, is expected.

According to the entity, the July figure represents the lowest entry recorded in the first nine months of fiscal year 2024, which began in October 2023. In that period, 15,645 Cubans were registered, 2,000 fewer than in June, when 17,563 citizens of the Island arrived in the country.

The migration crisis

In an unprecedented migratory exodus, Cubans are taking advantage of various ways to escape the country. Meanwhile, repatriations by sea or air continue unabated. Amid a context of food shortages, medical supplies and a serious inflationary crisis, many residents of the largest of the Antilles risk their lives to reach the United States.

In early August, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) repatriated a group of 34 rafters Cubans who were intercepted in the maritime vicinity of the Florida Keys.

In a release Issued from its official website, the USCG said that the crew of the Cutter Charles David Jr. repatriated 34 immigrants to Cubafollowing an interception near Marathon.

The 26 men, seven women and a girl had left the country illegally by sea. They were returned to the Cuban authorities in the port of Orozco, in Bahía Honda, Artemisa, said a statement from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT).

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sycamore had alerted Sector Key West watchstanders to the presence of a migrant boat Monday about 34 miles southeast of Boot Key. Crews from the Sycamore, Charles David Jr. and Station Marathon intercepted the boat and transferred the migrants to the Cutter Charles David Jr.
