Cubans improve personal bests in the U-20 World Championships in Athletics

The best lifetime records of Josmi Sánchez in the high and long jump events of the decathlon, and of Alejandro Parada in the long jump, marked Cuba’s debut this Monday at the U-20 World Championship in athletics based in the city of Cali, in Colombia.

Sánchez managed to overcome the bar at a height of 1.96 meters in the high jump, shortly after having jumped up to 7.05 meters in the length specialty, results that he had never achieved before and that are encouraging for the closing of the competition, in accordance with the sports portal Hit.

The 18-year-old from Havana closed the first half of the most demanding athletics event with a total of 3,818 points, a balance that places him in 14th place among the 27 registered in the event hosted by the state of Pascual Guerrro, from the city pot, add the medium.

Meanwhile, the long jumper Alejandro Parada also improved on previous performance with a jump of 7.95 meters, with which he was directly assured in the final of the specialty and with the best mark in the qualifying segment, highlights the specialized website.

His partner Aniel Molina did not suffer the same fate and fell short of expectations with 7.45 meters that left him in 18th place, without access to the group of 12 finalists, adds the text.

In this specialty, which will have the title discussion this Tuesday, the French Erwan Konate, champion of the universal event of the Nairobi 2021 category with 8.12 meters, starts as the favorite, and who now advanced with 7.80 meters, third in the order. The other who exceeded the required minimum mark (7.80) was the Italian Mattia Farlani with 7.85 meters.

He also had action for the Cuban athletics on the opening date the sprinter Reynaldo Espinosa, who entered second in his 100-meter eliminatory series with a time of 10.41 seconds, in order to secure a place in the final.

In that distance, Letsile Tebogo from Botswana stopped the clocks in exactly 10 seconds to justify his status as universal record holder among those under 20 years of age with 9.94 seconds, registered just two weeks ago in the World athletics championship of Eugene 2022, underlines Hit.

Both Parada and Espinosa will be fighting this Tuesday to contribute the first medal to the island’s delegation, made up of only seven athletes, while on the same day Liliet Cabrera will be making her debut, who will run in the women’s 400-meter hurdles heats.
