Cubans held at Bolivia airport face deportation risk

cubanos, migrantes, Bolivia

The 17 Cubans, including two minors, who had visas issued in the Bolivia Consulate in Cuba, are accused of carrying false documents.

Madrid, Spain.- Seventeen Cuban citizens, including two minors and an old Bolivia. The group was intercepted by migration agents during an air scale to Nicaragua and Brazil, amid complaints for alleged irregularities and fear of being returned to Cuba.

According to the testimonies collected by Cuban newspaper and Cuba report nowall were traveling with tourist visas, work or transit issued by the Bolivia Consulate in Cuba, but were accused of presenting false accommodation passages and reservations. Those affected attribute the situation to a possible scam committed by a travel agency based in Miami, which they paid to coordinate their itinerary.

Those who witnessed the arrest indicate that a clear explanation was not offered at the time of landing and that the accusation of illegal income occurred despite the fact that travelers remained in the international area of the airport.

The lawyer Lavive Müller, who represents two of the Cubans, went to the place to demand answers. He denounced that the authorities did not deliver official documentation that justified the inadmissibility, although verbally confirmed that deportation to Cuba had already been ordered.

Currently, the group is located in an airport room without resources, hungry and in precarious conditions. Some report stomach pain due to lack of food and ensure that the treatment received is not worthy for people in transit.

“We are not criminals, we enter with all the roles up to date … all we ask is to be treated as human beings,” said one of those affected.

Many sold all their belongings in Cuba to pay for the trip and seek to meet with relatives abroad. Given the possibility of being returned, they claim that they would be without housing and that they could suffer reprisals from the Cuban regime for the public exposition of their case.

In the last hours, citizens and organizations in Bolivia have begun to organize humanitarian aid, and it is expected that in the next few hours they will receive basic assistance.
