MADRID, Spain.- “The only way to truly end the crisis is to remove the Castro/Díaz-Canel regime from power,” I consider Cuban-American Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, referring to the arrival of more than 500 Cuban migrants to the Florida Keys in recent days.
“Cubans are fleeing in historic numbers due to the failure of the communist system on the island,” Salazar reaffirmed this Wednesday through the social network Twitter.
The congresswoman also referred to recent policies that have opened up more options for Cubans to legally emigrate to the United States.
On the other hand, he recalled that “crossing the Straits of Florida by raft is extremely dangerous and has caused thousands of painful deaths.”

Despite the risks involved in crossing the Straits of Florida in homemade boats, Cubans continue to take to the sea by the hundreds in the hope of reaching the shores of the United States and being admitted into the country.
The more than half a thousand Cuban migrants who have landed in the Florida Keys since last weekend have unleashed a humanitarian crisis. Due to the high number of rafters, local authorities are finding it difficult to transfer them for further processing, and many of them are being stranded on public roads.
Due to this massive arrival of Cubans last Monday, the Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida had to close its access to the public. According to a statement from the National Park Service, it will remain temporarily closed while the transportation of these people to Key West is coordinated.
Since October 1, 2022, the beginning of the fiscal year, to date, the crews of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) have intercepted more than 4,000 Cubans.
