Cubana de Aviación activates the Havana-Frankfurt route after 20 years without flying to Germany

Starting this December 2 and after 20 years without connecting the island with Germany, Cubana de Aviación will activate the direct Havana-Frankfurt route in a boost to the flow of tourists from that country in the midst of the fall in prices. flights to Cuba.

From its Facebook profile, the news was confirmed by the Cuban Embassy in Germany, without specifying times or frequencies. However, it is a reconnection announced in April of this yearwhen two weekly flights were confirmed on a 287-seat Airbus A330-200, with operations on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The initial announcement Made by the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, on social networks, he described the route as “a significant step in strengthening connectivity between Cuba and Europe, the result of the collaboration of Cubana de Aviación with other international airlines.”

The stated objective then was to “continue to increase the supply of flights in response to growing demand, as well as strengthen strategic collaborations with ranger partners in the sector, such as airlines and tour operators.”

Furthermore, the minister stressed that Cubana “aspires to be able to fly in the future with its own aircraft, a dream that reflects the capacity and spirit of our nation,” since it will use the Airbus A330-200, leased from an international partner. This aircraft has 17 seats in business class and 270 in economy.

At that time, the operation coincided with the definitive departure of the German airline Condor from the Cuban market, as reported Aviationline. Now, the reconnection occurs when international tourism accumulates a contraction of 20.5% until September.

Plummeting tourism

Data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) reveal that the island received 1,366,720 foreign visitors between January and September 2025, compared to 1,719,000 in the same period of 2024.

The decline, which moderated from the 25% recorded in June, complicates compliance even with the 2.2 million reached in 2024, the worst figure in 17 years, excluding the years impacted by Covid-19.

Germany has historically been one of the main sources of tourists to the island, but its visitors decreased by 43.5% in this period, according to the ONEI.

The degradation of basic services, the energy crisis and the reduction of air frequencies have intensified the fall in European demand, while the Cuban Government persists in considering tourism as a strategic pillar for earning foreign currency and economic recovery.
