Cuban triple jumpers sweep the final of the Athletics Diamond League

OnCubaNews

Cuban Andy Díaz won this Thursday in the men’s triple jump test of the final of the diamond league athletics, held in the Swiss city of Zurich, taking his personal best to 17.70 meters.

The lanky athlete, who after the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020 decided not to return to the island and settle in Italy, he took over the throne in the prestigious athletic circuit with his first jump, ultimately unattainable for Cubans too Peter Paul Pichardo and Jordan Díaz, his escorts in the contest.

For a few years Pichardo has represented the Portuguese federation, to which he has provided the Olympic titles in the Japanese city and the world title in the fair held last summer in Oregon, United States. Now he also took advantage of the first opportunity to nail his spikes 17.43 meters from the table and finish in second position.

Behind was the young man Jordan, whose break with the federation of the Island occurred before the Olympic event in the Japanese capital. This time the nationalized Spaniard and owner of that country’s record achieved a record of 17.60 meters that confirms his great projection for future commitments.

This great protagonism of Cuba in this specialty was expected, although it could be more if Lazaro Martinezthe only one that in the fight defended the colors of the Cuban Athletics Federation (FCA), would not have had a gray day.

The current indoor universal monarch opened his sequence with a null jump, and then he could only take his top to a discreet mark of 16.75 meters that placed him in the sixth and last position. The fourth seat was reserved for Huges Fabrice Zango (17.43), from Burkina Faso, and the fifth was occupied by the Brazilian Almir Dos Santos (17.10).

The long jump final also had a Cuban flavor: Olympic bronze medalist Maykel Massó slipped into third position with a jump of 8.05 meters in one of his only two attempts.

This time the champion Tokyo 2020the Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou, once again finished off his rivals with a final jump of 8.42 meters to leave the American Marquis Dendy, owner of 8.18 meters, in second position.

The other born on the Island present in the final of the diamond circuit was Yasmani Capello (49.10), who finished in sixth place in the 400 meter hurdles, a test dominated by the Brazilian world champion Alison Dos Santos with a time of 46.98 seconds.
