Jordan Díaz, who in February 2022 obtained nationality Spanish, will represent the Iberian country in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This possibility was announced last November by the Spanish Athletics Federation.
Until then, he was not allowed to defend the Spanish jersey in international championships until 2025, for having competed with the Cuban flag until recently, according to the laws. But since he obtained his nationality, the Spanish Federation had fought for it.
Díaz left the island’s delegation in Spain in June 2021 after the end of the Castellón Meeting, in which he did not participate.
“He escaped at the very airport before leaving for another tournament,” Andy Lans, a young Cuban sports analyst who spread the news on Twitter, revealed on that occasion.
According to Marca, Jordan Díaz “hid in Zaragoza, where he came into contact with Ana Peleteiro, bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, who brought him to the attention of the Spanish authorities.”
The case of the young Cuban quickly passed through various spheres of the Government of Spain, which accelerated the nationalization process.
Currently trained by fellow Cuban and world champion Iván Pedroso, Jordan Díaz is among the favorites to win the gold medal in Paris.
