MIAMI, United States. — Cuban trains could soon have Wi-Fi service, as announced by the Comprehensive Telecommunications Solutions Company SA (Solintel).

The state entity informed the official newspaper Granma who works on a project to offer wireless Internet to passengers “as part of the process of computerization of society.”

The engineer Robelis Lambert Matos, president of Solintel, indicated that the Wi-Fi service will offer a qualitative leap to rail transport, as well as a new standard of comfort.

According to the manager, the reference for the installation of the service on the island’s trains has its precedent in the catamaran fleet and in the area of Varaderowhich already have the same.

According to Lambert Ramos, the project for the installation of Wi-Fi in this means of transport will be carried out with software in the national industry and a pilot test is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year.

“We intend to close the year with service in some sections,” said the president of Solintel.

For the manager, the greatest difficulty for the installation of the service is in the entire central line, with several sections devoid of coverage.

“Passengers will be able to send and receive email messages with attachments, they will have access to the corporate intranet and will be able to browse the web, chat online with access to social networks and applications,” said Granma.

The official media also indicated that “the necessary equipment to allow connectivity remains to be defined and studies will be carried out on the network infrastructure and 4G LTE mobile telephony on the railway’s central line.”

In this sense, it will be the company Solintel itself that will provide the installation, assembly, configuration, start-up, advice, maintenance and technical assistance service to Ferrocarriles de Cuba for the future implementation of the Wi-Fi service.
