MADRID, Spain.- Cuban television director Jesús Cabrera Acosta died at dawn this Sunday at the age of 96.
The news was confirmed by the official media on the island, which referred to the director as a “pioneer of television in the country and, in particular, founder of television in Santiago de Cuba, with the creation of the Tele-Rebelde Channel.”
Cabrera Acosta directed numerous programs, many of them sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), such as The border of duty, Julito the fisherman, In silence it had to be, Sector 40 Y after the footprint. Of the latter, he was part of the production team from 2004 until his retirement in 2013.
National Television Award (2004), Master of Youth Award (2018) and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of the Arts of Cuba, he also directed the programs Horizons, ICR Theater, Sunday Comedy, The Return of David, Finlay and the National Television News.
According to the newspaper Granmahis work “marked a milestone in Cuban audiovisual production.”
As a teacher, he taught at the University of the Arts of Cuba and at the Faculty of Audiovisual Communication Media Art (FAMCA).
Known as “Chucho” Cabrera, he gave advice to different student and teacher projects, gave talks and conferences in Cuba and universities in Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. In addition, he was a member of the official Union Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).
According to official information, his remains will be cremated and a posthumous tribute will be made.
