Cuban teams finish in 19th place in the Chess Olympiad

The Cuban teams closed in 19th position in the Open and Women’s sections in the 44th Olympiad of Chessheld until Tuesday in the city of Chennai, in the Indiaaccording to official media on the island.

The men’s team, registered in the segment without distinction of sex, said goodbye to the contest with a victory of 2.5-1.5 over the representation of Canada, according to a report from the agency Latin Press (PL).

That outcome was influenced by the triumphs of Grand Master (GM) Luis Ernesto Quesada, with black pieces, against International Master (IM) Nikolay Noritsyn, and GM Isan Ortiz, with white pieces against GM Razvan Preotu, adds the information.

On the first board, GM Yasser Quesada divided the point by moving black pieces against Canadian GM Eric Hansen, while GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz was defeated on the second table by IM Raja Panjwani, who moved the dark figures.

In the women’s section, the Cubans beat the Philippines 2.5 to 1.5 during their last appearance at the International Chess Federation (Fide) event, enjoying the successes of IM Yerisbel Miranda against her counterpart Jan Jodilyn Fronda in the second board.

At the remaining tables, IM Lisandra Ordaz, GM Maritza Arribas and National Champion Yaniela Forgas split honors with GM Janelle Mae, IM Marie Anoinette San Diego and IM Kylen Joy Mordido, respectively.

Thanks to its performance throughout the fair, the Cuban women’s team was the most outstanding among the Latin American and Caribbean nations participating in that segment of the contest, ahead of Peru (place 27), Argentina (34), Chile (38) and Brazil (39).

In the open section, the Cubans achieved similar merit in the region, since Brazil (21), Peru (24), Argentina (33) and Chile (38) were behind them. PL.

Finally, the representation of Uzbekistan won the Hamilton-Russel Cup by winning the open section; because, although they finished with the same 19 points as Armenia, they benefited from the tiebreaker system used. The podium of the contest was completed by the India 2 team, with 17 units.

Ukraine won the Vera Menchik Cup as the winner of the women’s section. The tiebreaker consolidated him at the top with the same 18 points accumulated by the Georgia squad, while the locals anchored in third place, with 17 lines.

The Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy, reserved for the federation with the best results, combined with the performances of both segments, was won by India. In that classification, the Cuban teams joined forces to finish in 18th place.

PL recalls that the recently concluded version of the Chess Olympiad had the record participation of 350 teams from 186 countries and more than 1,700 players.
