Cuban students achieve four awards in Central American and Caribbean Olympiad

The student delegation of Cuba obtained good performance in the X Central American and Caribbean Olympiad of Physics (Occafi 2025)held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, by conquering a silver medal, two bronze and an honorary mention.

The team, composed of four young people, showed a high level of preparation in the theoretical and experimental tests of the contest, said Latin press.

The Silver medal corresponded to Rosmary Fernández Tamayo, 17student of the Preuniversity Vocational Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE) Luis Urquiza Jorge, in Las Tunas.

The young woman, who had already achieved an honorable mention in the 2024 edition, described her experience as “very rewarding individually and also for the team.”

Fernández Tamayo, who will begin the Computer Science career, has accumulated a remarkable trajectory in international competences, including his participation in the International Scientific Olympiad of Physics, held in Russia.

Medals for Cuba in Physics Olympiad

The two bronze medals were for Diago García Herrera, 17, of the IPVCE Ernesto Che Guevara in Villa Clara, and José Ángel Machín Fuentes, of 18, of the IPVCE Antonio Maceo in Santiago de Cuba.

Machín, also a competitor in Moscow, plans to study nuclear physics, while García Herrera will bow to automatic engineering.

The youngest in the group, Leiniel Valdés Fernández, obtained an honorable mention. Upon his return to the country, he will continue his twelfth grade studies in the IPVCE Ernesto Che Guevara.

Student preparation was in charge of National Physics of Physics, Josvany Sánchez Granados and Uberlando Labradawho accompanied the delegation with the Cuba ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Ángel Arzuaga.

The Clusura de la Occafi 2025 ceremony was held at the Manuel del Cabral Auditorium, in the Pedro Mir Library of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.

In this edition they competed Representatives of Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic and Cuba.
