The Cuban football team It was for the moment without director for the resignation of coach Yunielys Castillo.
The news, already It had been advanced by Oncuba weeks ago, it was confirmed this Saturday by the maximum entity of this sport on the island.
The Cuba Soccer Association (AFC) reported in its networks to have accepted the resignation of Castillo, who not only directed the major selection but also the U-20 team.
“After a joint analysis of the recent results, both parties agree that the planned objectives for this stage were not achieved. Consequently, and after a professional assessment, Castillo has decided to take a step to the side to allow a new impulse in the technical direction of the team,” says the statement.
The note, however, does not refer explicitly to the collapses of the island’s team under the command of the spirit coach, such as non -classification to the Gold Cup, the descent to the second level of the Concacaf Nations League and the Failure in World Cup qualifiers.
On the contrary, in a conciliatory tone – or, at least, diplomat – the AFC said “her sincere thanks to Yunielys for her services to Cuban football during her stage as a national coach”, despite the repeated questions of experts and fans.
Sub-20 selection
Another story is that of the U-20 team, to which Castillo managed to classify the World Cup that will take place in just over a month in Chile and whose training, in the opinion of analysts, privileged above the interests and commitments of the major team.
In this regard, the AFC especially recognized the coach for “her valuable contribution and leadership” in that “historical achievement” and announced that the Antillean squad to said event will be directed by its second.
“For that tournament, the management group that achieved the classification will remain in full, under Pedro Pablo Pereira, who served as an assistant technician and recently received the UEFA A coach license, granted by the Italian association coaches Soccer, one of the most prestigious in the world,” said the Antillean football entity.
In principle, the measure seems to privilege the continuity of the work done previously and avoid a sudden change of command and style of play, a few weeks after the start of an appointment in which Cuba will have as rivals in his elimination group to Argentina, Italy and Australia.
The AFC closes its statement by reiterating “its commitment to the continuous development of national football”, while “soon” will report on “the process for the designation” of the castle substitute in the absolute selection.
After its failures in the main leaders of the year, the main team of the island has no relevant commitments in the remainder of 2025, so the designation of the new coach could take, while the clamor of the fans grows for having a coach with an international route and a modern tactical vision that allows the selection to make a jump in their results.
