Havana Cuba. – Two activists from the Opposition Movement for a New Republic (MONR) were taken to prison shortly before the first anniversary of the historic protests of July 11 and 12, 2021, which occurred in more than 60 locations on the Island.
Oppositionist Mario Alberto Hernández Leyva, acting president of the MONR since the imprisonment of José Díaz Silva, has been detained since July 8. That day he was transferred to the Santiago de las Vegas police station and later to the Vivac classification center, also in the Boyeros municipality.
“Mario Alberto is still in the Vivac and is accused of non-payment of fines of about 15,000 pesos. I was recently informed that he had been on a hunger strike since that very day,” he told CubaNet the lady in white Lourdes Esquivel Vieyto.
He also continues behind bars in the 6th. Unit of the Marianao PNR, since July 11, MONR activist Wilver Acebedo Coba, “who was beaten by the uniformed to the point that they had to take him to a polyclinic.”
Other opponents were detained on the dates on which the first anniversary of the 11J protests were commemorated and released one or two days later, as is the case of Ohauri Rondón Rivero, Lázaro Rolando Kesser Barrueto, Lázaro Antonio Pérez González and some twenty more activists who, in addition, “were besieged and threatened by the political police,” said Esquivel Vieyto.
In the days leading up to 9/11, and even after, the regime deployed a strong repression against independent journalists, activists and opponentswho reported on those dates having been besieged, interrogated, threatened and detained.
“I think that the repression in these days was very strong and still continues; the dictatorship fears the opposition within the island. They know that many of us are committed to the freedom of all political prisoners and the people of Cuba,” Esquivel Vieyto assured.
The regime requests seven years of deprivation of liberty against her husband, José Díaz Silva, for the alleged crimes of attack and contempt.
