Cuban regime and Russia sign cooperation agreement for scientific research

Firma entre el EIMB y BioCubaFarma

AREQUIPA, Peru – The Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology (EIMB) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the Immunoassay Center of the Group of Cuban biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, Biocubafarma, signed this Sunday a cooperation agreement for the scientific research.

“This agreement is focused on obtaining products that are priorities for the public health of both countries.” It will also allow the institutional development processes of the Immunoassay Center to be promoted, as reported on Facebook the Institution itself.

This is the second agreement between the Cuban regime and Russia that transcends since 2025 began. Last week, it was learned that the Castro regime expects a credit for 60 million dollars for the purchase of fuels and the delivery of equipment that supports the Island’s impoverished electrical system.

The collaboration between Havana and Moscow in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical field has been consolidated since 2024 with several agreements in these branches.

Last June, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) announced an initial investment of $11.3 million in the Cuban state company BioCubaFarma for the development of drugs against geriatric and oncological diseases.

The investment, which could double in the future to reach 1 billion rubles ($11.26 million at the current exchange rate), aims to strengthen drug research and production in Russia, reducing dependence on imports and creating a own industrial base in the health sector.

“We strive to attract the best global drug producers to the Russian market to localize research and production, replace imports and create our own industrial base,” said Kiril Dmitriev, general director of the RDIF, quoted by the official media. Cubadebate.

Dmitriev said that investments in biopharmaceuticals and the development of drugs against geriatric and oncological diseases “will in the long run facilitate help to a greater number of patients and significantly expand the capabilities of Russian medicine”; Therefore, although the information is ambiguous, everything seems to indicate that these agreements could only be for the Russian benefit, and not for the Cuban population, devoid of all types of medications.
