Cuban regime and China agree to consolidate their ties in cybersecurity

Comisario general Wang Xiaohong en intercambios con Miguel Díaz-Canel y Raúl Castro

AREQUIPA, Peru – The Cuban regime consolidates its political ties with China and agrees to promote areas of cybersecurity, education and research.

The issue came to light this weekend, regarding the visit to Cuba of Commissioner General Wang Xiaohong, State Councilor and Minister of Public Security of China, who was received in Havana by Raúl Castro and the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel.

a report from the official journal Granma addresses the meeting with Díaz-Canel, where both parties showed interest in coordinating their propaganda apparatus, commenting on the “support for the confrontation of the policies of cultural colonization, hegemonic and also subversion, that the empire exercises over our nations”

In this regard, the Castro regime highlighted “the support that has been given to systematic, stable cooperation between the ministries of Public Security.” from both countriesin addressing issues that are of mutual interest and to confront common challenges, among them the challenges that strengthening cybersecurity imposes on us.”

On the other hand, during the exchange with Raúl Castro, the nonagenarian leader of the Communist Party in Cuba, he expressed his gratitude to China for its “timely collaboration” in the face of “the complex situation facing the Island.”

According to the state Latin Pressthis weekend the allies also expanded cooperation in education, training, academic research and scientific collaboration by signing memorandums of understanding on these topics.

The Higher School of State and Government Cadres of Cuba (Escegc) and several universities in the Chinese province of Hunan signed these agreements within the framework of the recently completed Public Administration Management Seminar for Latin American Countries.

The Caribbean side signed the memoranda with institutions such as the School of Administration, the School of Cities, the Railway Vocational School, the Professional School of Non-Ferrous Metal Technology and the Changsha Professional School of Environmental Technology, belonging to Hunan.

Rapprochement between Cuba and China: a worrying issue

At the end of last October, US authorities expressed “concern” about the strengthening of relations between the Cuban regime and the autocratic powers of Russia and China, after the recent summit of the BRICS, a bloc of countries that seeks to challenge Western dominance in the global political and economic landscape.

“We remain concerned about the activities of Russia and the People’s Republic of China with Cuba, and we continue to take measures to counter them,” said a State Department spokesperson in statements to Martí News.

American media such as the newspaper Wall Street Journal have reported increasing closeness between Cuba and China. The newspaper even claimed months ago that Chinese military bases were being built on the island and that Russian spies were operating in Cuban territory with the aim of monitoring US military activities in the region.

“We remain confident that we can meet all of our security commitments in our country and in the region,” declared the State Department spokesperson, reiterating Washington’s position in the face of growing tensions and the need to protect American interests in the face of possible influence of external actors such as Russia and China.

However, the representative of the US Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Cuban Government has the right to “choose the countries or groups with which it wishes to be associated,” although these alliances raise concern in Washington.
