Cuban prospect Roibelis Liranza leaves Cuba to seek a professional firm

MIAMI, United States. — Cuban prospect Roibelis Liranza, barely 17 years old, left the Island in recent days for the Dominican Republic, where he will try to sign with a Major League Baseball organization.

The information was disseminated by the writer and journalist Francys Romero, who pointed out that Liranza “had stood out from the lower categories, working as a batter as a pitcher.”

He report indicates that the young athlete made his debut in the current National Series with the Tigres de Ciego de Ávila and that his speed has already reached 90 miles.

In 21 innings of performance, Liranza, classified as a multi-position player, posted a record of two wins and two losses, pitched for an 8.57 ERA and struck out 14.

The young man stood out as a hitter in the 2023 Under-18 National Championship, in which he served as first baseman, second baseman and pitcher. In that contest he also left good offensive numbers: average of .309, 2 doubles, 2 triples and a home run. Plus, he finished as the team leader in hits for his team, with 25.

In that same championship, from the mound, he was the leader in complete games and registered 7-1, 0.94 ERA. He points out Francys Romero that in 59.2 innings of work he struck out 57 rivals and left an excellent WHIP of 0.96.

“Liranza was among the best Under-18 talents in Cuba when he left the island. I think he could remain a multi-role player as a pitcher and hitter,” said the expert, who highlighted the boy’s excellent physical condition.

“His height is 6.3 and he could gain more in athletics now that he trains with more professional methods,” Romero said of Liranza, who already trains at Edgar Mercedes’ Born to Play Academy.

The reporter indicated that Liranza has “his main tool” in his arm, with which he could exploit his talent as a gardener.

“I do not dismiss that he first specializes as a pitcher until he enters the MLB system. He can run, even finishing with 11 stolen bases in his first junior year in 2021-2022.”

Romero recalled that four other pitchers from the Ciego de Ávila team that participated in the 2022 Under-18 National Championship have already left the country: left-handed Yadiel Batista (signed with the St. Louis Cardinals), Jonathan Russell (Tampa Bay Rays), Geisel Tellez and Jonathan Lopez.
