Cuban political prisoner receives medical attention thanks to complaint on social networks

Luis Emilio Cabrera, preso político, cubano, 11J

HAVANA, Cuba.- Recently, the journalist Mónica Baró published on her wall of Facebook the concern of Norma Díaz, mother of the Camagüeyan political prisoner Luis Emilio Cabrera, who is serving a twelve-year sentence in the Kilo 9 prison, for having participated in the popular outbreak of the July 11, 2021 (11J).

The woman explained that her son suffers from a dangerous infection in one of his legs, for which he had to be transferred to the Kilo 8 prison hospital for medical attention. She also said that this is the seventh time that her son has been admitted since he was sent to prison, without an accurate medical diagnosis being required so far.

“First it started with his ears bursting, then (…) his arms burst, then it was in his parts, the testicles, the buttocks, and then all over his body. She had never appeared on her legs like now (…) She has many pimples full of humor, they are inflamed and red as if it were lymphangitis ”, assured the troubled mother.

When the journalist asked her if she had been able to see her son, she revealed that she had not seen him since March 2 and the next visit was not due until April 28. “I wish I could see my son,” lamented the lady.

The post goes on to report that, during previous admissions, Luis Emilio had been treated with Rosefin and Benzathine Penicillin, but now, and according to what he himself told his mother over the phone, he had only been given topical Gentamicin. The infection was so great that he feared losing one of his legs.

Desperate, Norma asked for help to make the case visible and get more effective antibiotics. She also assured that she would go to the prison to talk to the doctors because “my son has to have some solution other than lying on a bed with one leg rotting…”.

Less than 48 hours after this post, the journalist published a update in which he states that Luis Emilio has been duly diagnosed and is receiving adequate oral treatment. His mother has assured that he feels better and can walk.
