In a informative note of the National Revolutionary Police, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior (Minint) warned about a series of acts of violence related to currency exchange in the “illicit market” and perpetrated with the use of force and knives, among others objects.
“According to the investigations carried out, the use of social networks to propose the illicit sale or purchase of foreign currency is confirmed, mostly at a lower price than how it is normally marketed,” the information indicated.
The Minint pointed out that “the interest of the authors is to steal large sums of money and for this they agree with their victims in order to carry out the exchange, generally in tall buildings, remote places or houses with several entrances and exits, event that ends in a robbery through trickery or deception, intimidation of people, physical force, the use of knives or other objects”.
The note indicates that criminals operate with the use of false names and telephone lines that may have numbers registered outside the country or of deceased persons. In addition, carriers and homeowners who offer their address to carry out the illegal act have been implicated.
“In most cases, the perpetrators have a good physical appearance and empathetic characteristics that make the victims trust that everything will be fine in the change,” the text added.
The Minint assured that the people detained for the thefts have been given “due process, receiving the corresponding legal guarantees and criminal measures as a consequence of their acts.” Other people allegedly involved in the events are in the process of investigation pending the oral trial, the statement said.
The authorities of the Ministry of the Interior urged people to go to the police stations to file complaints when they are victims of these crimes, taking into account that the investigations carried out brought to light facts that they do not know of formal accusations.
