MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban poet and anti-communist fighter Angel Cuadra Landrovewho died in Miami in February 2021 at the age of 89, will be honored on October 29 at 11 a.m. on the grounds of the Félix Varela Park in this city.
The PEN CLUB of Cuban Writers and Artists in Exile, the organization in charge of the event, reported that during the event a bronze plaque will be unveiled that will permanently honor the life of the late poet, his work and his commitment to the freedom of the people of Cuba.
The organizers of the tribute to Ángel Cuadra Landrove highlight the “fundamental cooperation” of Miami-Dade Commissioner Javier Souto, as well as the importance of the place where the tribute will be held, which also hosts memorials dedicated to figures such as Father Loredo and the former Czech president. Vaclav Havel.
Born in Havana on August 29, 1931, Ángel Cuadra Landrove fought against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and later against that of Fidel Castro, for which he was imprisoned in 1967. Before going into exile, the poet spent 15 years in prison . His texts, critical of the communist system, were described by the Cuban regime as “subversive activity.”
Cuadra Landrove was one of the founders and first president of the PEN CLUB of Cuban Writers in Exile. Thanks to the quality of his poetic work, he obtained several awards, being the first Hispanic American to obtain the prestigious “Amantes de Teruel Award”, which is awarded annually by the City Council of that Spanish city.
Among his works are Step (1959), Impromptus (1977), That sadness that floods us (1985), fantasy for friday (1985), signs and dreams (1988), Violent Requiem by Juan Palach (1989), the unavoidable voice (1994), ten hidden sonnets (2000) and The voice in time: Poetic anthology (1957-2018).
