Cuban photographer and filmmaker Mario García Joya dies in Miami

Cuban photographer and filmmaker Mario García Joya Mayito died in Miami at the age of 85, friends and family announced this Saturday.

Between 1955 and 1958 he studied Plastic Arts at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts and in 1978 obtained a degree in Hispanic Language and Literature at the University of Havana. In 1988 he received the teaching category of Associate Professor of the Higher Institute of Art (ISA).

In 1967 he was appointed Director of Photography of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC). He joined the tape filming crew as The Last Supper (1976), Until a certain point (1982), with you in the distance (1992) and Strawberry and Chocolate (1993).

In the United States he was director of photography for the films Now yes (2003), cute cuba (2001), the tears of soul (2000), The Princess and the Barrio Boy (2000), The Emerald Cut (1999), Courage (1998), Paradise Lost (1997), Modern Rhapsody (1996) and the short film huaja california (1994).

Last September it was learned that he suffered from a terminal illness that had caused him to lose his neurological functions.
