Cuban orthopedic doctor Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra dies in Havana

MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban orthopedic doctor Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra, a reference in this specialty on the island, died this Thursday afternoon in Havana at the age of 88.

A note of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) indicates that the body of Álvarez Cambra is being exposed at the Calzada y K Funeral Home since 8:00 pm today.

That state body also specified that in the coming days the renowned doctor will receive a posthumous tribute at the Frank País Orthopedic Hospital, “to which he dedicated his entire life.”

Born on December 22, 1934 in Candelaria, Pinar del Río, Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra “devoted his life to the study and development of orthopedics and traumatology, research and training of new generations in these specialties in Cuba and the world” .

“Dr. Álvarez Cambras was sent to France by the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz, to pursue postgraduate studies. Upon his return, he assumed the direction of the Frank País Orthopedic Hospital, turning it into the Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex. From that moment on, he dedicated his life to the development of orthopedics and traumatology, research, and the training of new generations in the specialty in Cuba and the world, ”indicates the MINSAP note.

The orthopedist’s career was closely linked to the development of Cuban sports after 1959, since it was Álvarez Cambra himself who was personally in charge of “caring for and saving the careers of hundreds of injured athletes and several Olympic champions.”

While alive, Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra was recognized with the distinction of Labor Hero of the Republic of Cuba and several decorations, medals and tributes granted by the island’s regime.

The MINSAP reports that the orthopedist presided over the Frank País Cuban Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology for several decades and is also an honorary member and holder of multiple international scientific societies.
