Cuban opponent Alfredo Guilleuma Rodríguez, El Viejo Alfredo, dies

Alfredo Guilleuma Rodríguez

Havana Cuba. – Alfredo Guilleuma Rodríguez, popularly known as El Viejo Alfredo, died on the night of this July 11 in his own home, at the age of 92.

Old Alfredo could not be cremated, as he wished, since each funeral home is assigned only one daily cremation, as reported to CubaNet opposition activist José Alberto Álvarez Bravo.

Álvarez Bravo, who told this outlet that at the funeral held at Calzada y K there was “a discreet presence of the repressive apparatus,” also pointed out that “a small group of dissidents, one of the few that State Security agents allowed to arrive ” went to the funeral.

Alfredo Guilleuma, whose remains were buried in the Colón Cemetery, was a tireless fighter against the Cuban communist regime.

As an underground fighter, Alfredo opposed the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista first and that of the Castros later. He belonged to the Cuban Liberal Movement and was a regular participant in the masses of the Ladies in White in the church of Santa Rita de Casia, from where he always accompanied them on their Sunday marches.

After hearing the news of his death, several Cuban opponents expressed their dismay at the death of El Viejo Alfredo on social networks. Among them, the leader of the Ladies in White, Berta Soler Fernández, remembered him as a “brave warrior.”

The independent journalist Yunia Figueredo also referred to Alfredo as “a brother who, despite his age, was always wherever he wanted, supporting everyone and fighting for freedom.”

Old Alfredo always had the hope and conviction that Cuba would be free and, he affirmed, that he felt strong to continue fighting for the freedom of his country, as he told CubaNet in a recent interview.
