Cuban musician Lázaro Valdés dies

CDMX, Mexico.- The prominent artist Lázaro Valdés Espinosa died at dawn on January 1, 2023 in Havana, at the age of 83, reported the Cuban Institute of Music (BCI)

Valdés was the last pianist of the “Giant Band” of Benny Morea formation that he directed and kept active for several years after the death of its creator, according to the ICM.

The artist, who studied at the Marianao conversatory in Havana, was the last pianist of Benny Moré’s “Giant Band”. Group that he directed for several years, after the death of the legend.

On his Facebook social profile, the ICM highlights the interpretations of Lázaro Valdés in genres such as Son and Jazz, and affirms that his legacy constitutes a benchmark for Cuban piano music. As it was for his son Lazarito Valdés, director of the Bamboleo orchestra.

While alive, the pianist received the Raúl Gómez García Medal, from the Union of Culture Workers, and the Distinction for National Culture, awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
