The natural cyclist from the Jagüey Grande municipality fulfilled a successful strategy during the nine laps of the 12.6-kilometer circuit. Despite not having the backing of other competitors on the island, he joined a group of eight riders to stage an impossible break away.
The Cuban “marked the lead for only a few meters and then followed the designed race strategy: save energy for the end because the sun, humidity and wind of the circuit were sharp daggers on the bicycle,” the newspaper describes.
The young yumujrino threw himself into the sprint on the last slope “with a devilish force” that complicated the definition in photofinish.
The commissioners decided “by wheel millimeters” the gold for the Ecuadorian Kevin Navas, the silver for the Colombian Juan David Urán and the bronze for the Cuban, adds the publication.
The young Montes de Oca had already signed another good performance in the contest after placing against all odds in 17th place in the time trial for his category, won by the Colombian Robinson Rincón.
