Cuban men’s team advances to round of 16 in World Volleyball Championship

The men’s national volleyball team will be in the round of 16 of the World Championship, despite having lost yesterday against Japan 3 sets to 1. The team will face Italy next Saturday.

The Cubans advanced to the round of 16 among the four best third places in the group stage, led by the first two of each of the six groups in competition.

At the end of the qualifiers, Jesus Herrera stood out for the national team, second best scorer, with 60 points, and spiker (53), and Roberlandy Simón, also second, but among the blockers, with nine.

On Sunday 4, the United States-Turkey and Poland-Tunisia matches will take place in the Polish city of Gliwice. The program for Monday 5 will be with the Netherlands-Ukraine and France-Japan (Ljubljana) challenges, and for Tuesday 6 with the matches Serbia-Argentina and Brazil-Iran (Gliwice).

Serbia led group A with nine points, three won and none lost, followed by Ukraine (6/2-1), Tunisia (3/1-2) and Puerto Rico (0/0-3), Brazil (8/3 -0) led group B, ahead of Japan (6/2-1), Cuba (4/2-1) and Qatar (0/0-3), and Poland (9/3-0) dominated group C, escorted by the United States (6/2-1), Mexico (2/1-2) and Bulgaria (1/0-3).

France (8/3-0) placed first in D, joined by Slovenia (7/2-1), Germany (3/1-2) and Cameroon (0/0-3), Italy (9/3- 0) was better than Turkey (6/2-1), Canada (3/1-2) and China (0/0-3), as well as the Netherlands (8/3-0), but leaving Iran behind (5/2-1), Argentina (2/1-2) and Egypt (1/0-3).
