In the morning hours of today, the well-known Cuban intellectual Esteban Morales passed away, who was on a family visit in Colombia.
An economist by profession, however, he ventured with absolute organicity into other disciplines of knowledge such as political science and sociology. And in both domains he stood out for his contributions to the study of Cuba/United States relations and the problems of racism and his permanence in Cuban culture.
Professor Esteban Morales was also director of the Center for Studies on the United States of the University of Havana (CESEU), where a group of young researchers came together who worked under his guidance and intellectual leadership, and who later held various responsibilities in the academia and even in Cuba’s foreign relations.
He was one of the founders of the academic exchange with the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) during the days of the Carter administration.
Cuban culture loses with him a sharp, polyhedral, and committed thinker.
Our deepest condolences to family, colleague and friends.
